Britain on Friday slapped a fresh wave of sanctions on Moscow, targeting 386 members of Russia’s parliament who supported President Vladimir Putin’s devastating invasion of Ukraine.The new sanctions against members of Russia’s Duma, the lower house of parliament, ban them from travelling to Britain as well as accessing any assets they hold in the UK.The lawmakers were sanctioned after they voted in February to recognise the breakaway republics of Lugansk and Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, providing a pretext for the war, Britain’s foreign ministry said.“We’re targeting those complicit in Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine and those who support this barbaric war,” Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said.“We will not let up the pressure and will continue to tighten the screw on the Russian economy through sanctions.”
The Mayor of the Ukrainian city of Melitopol has been kidnapped.He was kidnapped on Friday by Russian soldiers occupying the city, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky.The war, which has continued for more than two weeks now, have seen the Russian troops closing in on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.The New Delhi Television Ltd reports that Russian advances have sparked fears that Kyiv could soon be encircled.Since the beginning of the war, the West and the European Union have continued to step up sanctions against Russia, with the last being the United States imposing a ban on Russian seafood, vodka and diamonds.
Roman Abramovich has been disqualified as a Chelsea director by the Premier League board after the British government sanctioned the Russian billionaire.Chelsea owner Abramovich was one of seven more oligarchs sanctioned this week by the UK following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.The European champions have been placed under tough restrictions due to the sanctions on Abramovich.Chelsea are unable to sign players, renew contracts or sell tickets to matches, with limits on the amount of money they are allowed to spend on travel to away games.Now Premier League chiefs have taken action against Abramovich, who is described by the government as part of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle despite his denials of any association.“Following the imposition of sanctions by the UK Government, the Premier League board has disqualified Roman Abramovich as a director of Chelsea Football Club,” a Premier League statement said on Saturday.“The board’s decision does not impact on the club’s ability to train and play its fixtures, as set out under the terms of a licence issued by the Government, which expires on May 31 2022.”

The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has handed the staff of office to Oba Lekan Balogun as the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadan.
This was during the new monarch’s coronation ceremony held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The ceremony was graced by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and former Vice President Atiku Abubarkar.
Other dignitaries in attendance were Gov Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti, Gov Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, Deputy Governor of Osun, Benedict Alabi and Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the Deputy Governor of Ondo State.
Also at the event were the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III; the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar; Olugbo of Ugbo Kingdom, Oba Fredrick Obateru Akinruntan; and Ambassador of Republic of China to Nigeria, Cui Jiauchun.
Oba Yusuf Adeleye, the Olubaka of Okaland in Ondo State; Oluwo of Iwoland; the Ikere of Saki, Aseyin of Iseyin, former Governor of Oyo State and the Otun Olubadan, Chief Rasidi Ladoja and a former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Femi Pedro were also present.
The ceremony was officially declared open at exactly 11.14am with the recitation of the National Anthem, Oyo State Anthem as well as Ibadan Anthem.

The show promoter of Mr and Miss Nigeria International, Mr Brendan Nsikak, has lauded the participation of Chidinma Ojukwu, the suspected killer of Super TV Chief Executive Officer, Michael Ataga, in the ‘Miss Cell 2022’ pageant organised for female inmates by the Nigerian Correctional Services.
Nsikak, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Brendance and Crusader Limited, gave the commendation in an interview with newsmen on Friday in Lagos, while reacting to the Miss Cell Pageant held within the Kirikiri correctional facility, and won by Chidinma.
Chidinma is standing trial for the murder of Ataga at the Lagos High Court, sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square.
“I commend the initiative and salute the courage of the participants, and to the ‘ Miss Cell 2022’, let her live her life until the judgment is served and passed on her,” Nsikak said.
The ‘Miss Cell’ beauty pageant was organised on March 8 as one of several activities lined up to mark International Women’s Day at the Kirikiri correctional facility.
Nsikak described the initiative as worthwhile, saying it was part of social activities to keep the inmates in sound mind and good spirit.
“It is a commendable step for Ojukwu to have the courage and boldness to take part in the competition, in spite of her ongoing trials at the courts.
Despite the purported ouster of the embattled Chairman of the All Progressives Congress Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, by his Niger State counterpart, Abubakar Bello, Buni may still be in control after all.
This is as the Independent National Electoral Commission rejected a letter inviting it to an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee of the governing party where Bello’s chairmanship, among other things, is to be ratified.
INEC’s position is contained in a letter dated March 9, 2022, signed by the Secretary to INEC, Rose Anthony, titled, ‘Re: Invitation to the emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee.’
The letter is addressed to the National Chairman, APC CECPC.
The commission drew informed the CECPC that the letter of invitation was not signed by the National Chairman and National Secretary of the CECPC, Buni and Dr John Akpanudoedehe, respectively.
It said this was contrary to the provision of Article 1.1.3 of the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for Political Party Operations (2018).
Faulting the letter further, INEC reminded the signatories to the letter that of the provision in Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, “which requires ‘at least 21 days’ notice of any convention, congress, conference, or meeting convened for the purpose of merger and electing members of its executive committees, other governing bodies or nominating candidates for any elective office.”
