APC crisis: Buhari’s failure infectious, says HURIWA

The administration crisis rocking the ruling All Progressives Congress is evidence of the inept misgovernment of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), in all aspects of the governance in Nigeria in the last seven years, civil rights advocacy group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, has said.HURIWA, in a statement on Friday by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, said the power tussle shaking the boat of APC whose leader is said to be the President has shown that the APC government cannot competently run the affairs of the country going forward. The group pointed out that the President and APC governors run the affairs of the party like headmasters, with no regard for constitutional and legal provisions by the Independent National Electoral Commission, thus the many woes confronting the party. The PUNCH had earlier reported that the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, said the President ordered the APC Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee to remove Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State as Chairman and replace him with his Niger State counterpart, Abubakar Bello. But INEC rejected a letter inviting it to an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee of the governing party where Bello’s chairmanship, among other things, is to be ratified. The commission drew the attention of CECPC to the fact that the letter of invitation was not signed by the National Chairman and National Secretary of the CECPC, Buni and Dr John Akpanudoedehe, respectively. It said this was contrary to the provision of Article 1.1.3 of the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for Political Party Operations (2018).

Super TV CEO: Show promoter commends Chidinma’s participation in beauty pageant

The show promoter of Mr and Miss Nigeria International, Mr Brendan Nsikak, has lauded the participation of Chidinma Ojukwu, the suspected killer of Super TV Chief Executive Officer, Michael Ataga, in the ‘Miss Cell 2022’ pageant organised for female inmates by the Nigerian Correctional Services.

Nsikak, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Brendance and Crusader Limited, gave the commendation in an interview with newsmen on Friday in Lagos, while reacting to the Miss Cell Pageant held within the Kirikiri correctional facility, and won by Chidinma.

Chidinma is standing trial for the murder of Ataga at the Lagos High Court, sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square.

“I commend the initiative and salute the courage of the participants, and to the ‘ Miss Cell 2022’,  let her live her life until the judgment is served and passed on her,” Nsikak said.

The ‘Miss Cell’ beauty pageant was organised on March 8 as one of several activities lined up to mark International Women’s Day at the Kirikiri correctional facility.

Nsikak described the initiative as worthwhile, saying it was part of social activities to keep the inmates in sound mind and good spirit.

“It is a commendable step for Ojukwu to have the courage and boldness to take part in the competition, in spite of her ongoing trials at the courts.

APC crisis: INEC rejects Bello’s letter, recognises Buni, gives reasons

Despite the purported ouster of the embattled Chairman of the All Progressives Congress Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, by his Niger State counterpart, Abubakar Bello, Buni may still be in control after all.

This is as the Independent National Electoral Commission rejected a letter inviting it to an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee of the governing party where Bello’s chairmanship, among other things, is to be ratified.

INEC’s position is contained in a letter dated March 9, 2022, signed by the Secretary to INEC, Rose Anthony, titled, ‘Re: Invitation to the emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee.’

The letter is addressed to the National Chairman, APC CECPC.

The commission drew informed the CECPC that the letter of invitation was not signed by the National Chairman and National Secretary of the CECPC, Buni and Dr John Akpanudoedehe, respectively.

It said this was contrary to the provision of Article 1.1.3 of the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for Political Party Operations (2018).

Faulting the letter further, INEC reminded the signatories to the letter that of the provision in Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, “which requires ‘at least 21 days’ notice of any convention, congress, conference, or meeting convened for the purpose of merger and electing members of its executive committees, other governing bodies or nominating candidates for any elective office.”

Headies goes to USA for 15th edition

As the Afrobeats scene continues to take the centre stage in global music, organisers of the prominent national music award, The Headies, have announced that the 15th edition of the award would be hosted in Atlanta, United States.

Making the announcement, on Tuesday, at the Eko Hotels in Lagos, the organisers also said that this year the award, which would be held at the COBB Energy Performing Arts Center, on Saturday July 2, 2022, is in partnership with the US Consulate.

The United State consulate said that it takes pride in partnering with the awards platform, because it will create positive employment opportunities for Americans.

“We are very proud to see Nigeria and its relationship with the United States. This is the year for Nigeria with arts and cultures, music, film and even sports. Three Grammy winners in Nigeria… I’m sure it’s going to attract American talents as well,” a representative from the Consulate said.

This year would also see the Headies dole out a brand new 2022 Bentley Bentayga, which is valued at over N78 million, to the winner of the glamourous Next Rated category. The winners of previous editions had been gifted with SUVs, with Rema picking up the GAC Sports Utility Vehicle, last year.

Interestingly, the award also introduces new categories including Music Executive of The Year, Best Afrobeat Pop Single & Album, Best African Collaboration, Best International Collaboration, African Artiste of the Year, and International Artiste of the Year, respectively.

The Headies, originally called The Hip-Hop World Awards, began in 2006, to recognize and reward talents across Nigeria’s music industry. Broadcast live across the country, on the HipTV Platform, the Headies has helped to spotlight deserving talents, from Wizkid, to Burna Boy, to Davido, Tiwa Savage, among others, from their early breakout stages till date.
